Coomakesta Pass Kerry Ireland

Coomakesta Pass is one of the most photographed panoramas on The Ring of Kerry, and for good reason. The views of Derrynane Bay and Abbey Island, Deenish Island and Scariff Island are wonderful. There are some picnic tables too, making it a nice spot to take a break break.

Coomakista Pass descends down to Caherdaniel village, a great spot for traditional music at The Blind Piper pub.

Derrynane House & National Park was once home to the Great “Liberator” Daniel O’Connell and well worth a visit.

Did You Know?

A little history . . .

Fredrick Douglass, the African-American abolitionist and great orator (1818-1895) drew inspiration from his friend Daniel O’Connell, who lived in Derrynane. President Barak Obama, in his turn, has also acknowledged his admiration of both men:

“For his part, Douglass drew inspiration from the Irishman’s courage and intelligence, ultimately modelling his own struggle for justice on O’Connell’s belief that change could be achieved peacefully through rule of law … the two men shared a universal desire for freedom – one that cannot be contained by language or culture or even the span of an ocean.”
