A Donegal Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point

Muckros Head – Cionn Mhucrois

Muckros Head, or Cionn Mhucrois in Irish, is a Donegal Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point. It is a headland with two beautiful beaches, Trá na nGlór in Irish, or “beach of the noise, this has a rip tide and is popular with surfers but take care! The other beach Trá Bán, meaning “white beach” is a few hundred metres away and is safe for swimming and used more as a family beach. Trá Bán beach has a car park and toilet facilities in summer.

The coastline here is characterised by horizontal layers of hard sandstone and softer mudstone which has weathered to produce interesting overhangs popular with rock climbers.

The nearest village is Kilcar. The views are wonderful and take in Inishduff Island, Donegal Bay and in the distance, counties Leitrim, Sligo and Mayo.
